Oily skin – how to reduce excessive sebum secretion?
Anyone who struggles with oily skin knows how difficult skin care can be. Shiny skin, clogged pores and acne-prone skin can be a nuisance. But did you know that the right skin care routine can really make a difference to your skin?
In the second post of the series “Perfect complexion? It’s simpler than you think!” we’ll give you tips on how to effectively reduce excessive sebum secretion and restore your complexion to a healthy glow – without unwanted shine.
Why does the skin produce too much sebum?
Sebum, or sebum, is our skin’s natural protection. However, when the sebaceous glands work too intensively, overproduction occurs, which can lead to problems such as oily skin and acne. The causes can be:
Hormones – hormonal changes (such as during puberty, menstrual cycle or pregnancy).
Inadequate skin care – over-drying the skin with aggressive cosmetics causes the sebaceous glands to “defend themselves” by producing even more sebum.
How to reduce sebum secretion?
Gentle cleansing
Clean skin is a must, but it’s not about aggressive cleansing that will destroy the skin’s protective barrier.
➡ Choose cleansing gels without alcohol, but with ingredients such as salicylic acid or clay.
➡ Wash your face twice a day – in the morning and in the evening.
Toning and rebalancing
A toner will help balance your skin’s pH after cleansing.
➡ Bet on products with niacinamide, which regulates the sebaceous glands.
Moisturizing – the key to success
Oily skin needs moisturizing too! Lack of proper cream can lead to overproduction of sebum.
➡ Reach for light, gel creams with hyaluronic acid.
Regular exfoliation
Removing dead skin prevents clogged pores.
➡ Use enzyme scrubs or products with AHA/BHA acids a maximum of 2-3 times a week.
Proper diet
What you eat affects your complexion.
➡ Limit sugar, fast food and fatty foods. Increase your intake of vegetables, fruits and zinc-rich foods (such as pumpkin seeds).
Makeup in moderation
➡ Choose non-comedogenic cosmetics that do not clog pores. Use lightweight foundations or BB creams.
Professional skin care treatments
➡ Consider microdermabrasion, chemical peels or laser treatments – they will help regulate sebum secretion.
Recommended ingredients in cosmetics for oily skin:
Niacinamide – reduces sebum secretion and soothes inflammation.
Salicylic acid – cleanses pores and has an anti-inflammatory effect.
Clay (green, white) – absorbs excess sebum.
Zinc PCA – mattifies the skin and has an antibacterial effect.
Plant extracts – such as tea tree and aloe vera.
Reducing excessive sebum secretion does not require radical steps. The key lies in regular, thoughtful care and careful selection of cosmetics. Remember that everyone’s skin is different – observe your complexion and adjust products according to its needs.
